Photograph of the D.J. Sind Arts College (now known as the D. J. Government Science College) of Karachi, taken by an unknown photographer, c.1800, from an album of 46 prints titled 'Karachi Views'. Designed by James Strachan and considered this architect's greatest achievement, the college was built between 1887 and 1893. Named after the Sindhi philanthropist Dayaram Jethmal, whose two family members contributed towards its cost, the building was constructed in the neoclassical, or Italian architectural style. A considerable amount of money was spent on the interior of the college; the floors comprised mosaic tiles imported from Belgium and the eight-foot wide main staircase was fitted with ornamental cast-iron work from McFarlane & Company of Glasgow. Karachi, once the capital of Pakistan, is now the capital of Sindh province and the major port and main commercial centre of the country. It was a strategically located small port at a protected natural harbour on the Arabian Sea north-west of the mouth of the Indus, and was developed and expanded by the British when they took over Sindh in the mid-19th century to serve the booming trade from the Punjab and the wheat and cotton regions of the sub-continent

013-Art_Craft Model

This is a model describing how I believe art and craft relate, or at least how improving your skill in using your tools (camera, Photoshop, lighting etc.) has nothing to do with improving your art and everything to do with improving the quality of the surface and the function of the finished product. Both Art and Craft are worthy pursuits, although with Craft you have a better idea when you are improving :)

'Fine Art', although not discussed, has nothing to do with Art, although possibly a lot to do with how saleable your Art is when you have produced it.

Queen Anne Hill Arts & Crafts House

Seattle has few buildings built before 1900, and I know of none older than 1890. This means the oldest and most beautiful houses are in the Arts & Crafts style, their deep eaves a perfect complement to the Puget Sound climate, allowing windows to be open for a fresh breeze while keeping the rain out. This lovely house near the top of Queen Anne Hill has long been a favorite of mine.

I have updated my Art-Craft model after some thought, making it a little more difficult to get to fine art from a very craft operation like a factory robot operation (still programmed by a highly skilled human, though), I also added a 'juvenile' area, the place where we all start from when we are born.

To make it slightly less like a graph and more like the image in my mind, I have added some graphics - the organisation of Craft, the unmapped forest of Art, and the natural ascent into skill (by balloon).

Thinking we were going to see some ancient cave art, I was slightly dissapointed to see that this was a very modern painting OF some ancient cave art. Because it rains, they have to repaint it every 12 months.

WUE — What's the colour like?

Wue is a program which finds a correlation between weather and colour and translates it to a colour hex. Using specific variables in the weather: temperature, daylight, visibility, humidity, WUE takes this information and breaks it down into HUE, SATURATION, and VALUE which can then be converted into a colour hex and used to pull up a group of images that suits the atmosphere of the weather outdoors.
