I'm way too honest.. when security says check your camera in the cloak room I actually do it *doh!*.. well, as a result I only got shots at Art Basel with my iPhone and this is one of the few I actually like. Description below, courtesy of arrestedmotion.com:

Just as he did for his museum show at the BALTIC, LA show last year, and show in NY this year, Yoshitomo Nara teams up with YNG to present another stunning installation at this year’s Art Basel (Switzerland) in what appears to be joint venture between Blum & Poe, Marianne Boesky Gallery, and Tomio Koyama Gallery. The distinctively Nara structure was seen at Art Unlimited, the exhibition for projects that transcend the classical art, including video projections, large-scale installations, massive sculptures and live performances. More from Art Unlimited can be seen in this video from Vernissage TV including glimpses of Nara’s installation.

Built in 1916, the historic Elaine Bagley Neff bungalow is a beautifully maintained example of an Arts & Crafts bungalow.

The Baldwin bungalows, built by Nathaniel Baldwin for his radio factory employees, although more modest in scale and decoration, represent a significant phase in the history of the Evergeen Avenue neighborhood.

This is another new arts & crafts style house. The stone cladding and large windows make this a particularly attractive home. The view from those windows is probably worth as much as the house, since it overlooks the river and Bessborough Hotel.

NYC: Museum of Arts & Design

The Museum of Arts & Design (MAD) is a center for the collection, preservation, study, and display of contemporary hand-made objects in a variety of media. Founded as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in 1956 by philanthropist Aileen Osborn Webb, it was originally housed in a Victorian brownstone at 29 West 53rd Street. In 1986, the museum moved to four floors of a new building at 40 West 53rd Street and was renamed the American Craft Museum. The new space, designed by Roche-Dinkeloo, with an interior created by Fox & Fowle Architects, doubled the space of the original quarters. In 2002 it changed its name again to the Museum of Arts & Design.

In September 2008, MAD moved to a new location at 2 Columbus Circle, designed by Brad Cloepfil and Allied Works Architecture. With more than 54,000 square feet and four floors of galleries, the museum tripled its space.

The design for the new building dramatically opened up the 158-foot tall nearly windowless building to enliven its gallery space with natural light and views of the city. A series of three separate cuts, each one a continuous line fitted with transparent and fritted glass, weaves across the building’s facade to create a light-filled, cantilevered structure. These bands of glass continue inside the building across the floors, ceilings, and walls of each level, to provide a unified sense of space and a visual connection among the galleries.

The building’s façade is clad with custom-made terracotta tiles finished in a pale iridescent glaze that changes with the time of day and point of view. Through the use of glass and ceramic, two materials that figure prominently in the Museum’s collection, the new building design explores and interprets the craft traditions of the institution’s core mission.

I ended up chatting with the man who ran this stand for quite a bit (and also bought a small charm from him). We talked about the weather and that it would snow but also about education on Indian reservations and how it was still so recent that control over Indian education had been returned to the hands of the reservations (rightly so) and how things were getting better, kind of, because at the very least kids were learning the languages of their cultures and not being sent away to isolate and brainwash the Indian out of them.
