A money wall in the historic hotel of downtown Oatman, Arizona. Somehow I bet the original decoupage on the money looked a lot better when it was done than it does now. The previous photos also show the money wallpaper and the money hanging from the ceiling of the restaurant and bar of the 1902 hotel.

Art Center Interactive Table
art and design
Last night my friend Chris Greazel and I attended the Graduation show at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. This fuzzy photo is of (I think I remember this right) Jeffrey Jarvis, a student at Art Center and this table is interactive. The table responds to touch and Jeff had programmed it to respond in interesting ways. I bent his ear a little and got him to talk about the technology a bit. It can respond to multiple touches but it's not a multitouch screen, it responds to the various inputs/touches serially. His application was built in Flash/ActionScript and it did various semirandom actions when you would put a finger down. The resolution of the display is 768x768 pixels, relatively low resolution compared to Microsoft Surface I should think. Jeff was telling me that before they put the leather outer casing (making it nice to lean on) the interactions people would do were much less comfortable. Making it easy to get engaged. I mentioned that I had heard Jim Bumgardner speak about interfaces at Yahoo a few weeks ago at the Web Developer Meetup and he said that is was Jim Bumgardner who taught this class! All in all, a great evening out for my old friend and I.

...

More from http://www.artcenter.edu/mdp/:

Philip van Allen is teaching students to work with Interactive Multi-Touch table this summer using an Oracle, a round, multi-touch table designed originally for use in the harsh environment of the Detroit Auto Show (e.g. it does not use a camera for touch detection). The table, on loan to the MDP from George P. Johnson (GPJ) in exchange for a first-look at new concepts developed by our students, was originally designed by MDP alum Nikolai Cornell, Interactive Design & Technology Lead at GPJ, who brought in Philip van Allen and the Moto Development Group to design the technology.

ART INSTALLATION IN SECOND LIFE BY NEBULOSUS

Check out these music & arts images:

ART INSTALLATION IN SECOND LIFE BY NEBULOSUS
music & arts
The art community in Second Life is a varied one. Fine art, outsider art, underground art, performance art and music are all mixed in with the technical aspects of programming and scripting.

Second Life is one of the first places to combine right and left brain thinkers into one fantastic execution of art and builds in a virtual reality.

The sophistication of the artist is apparent at several places on the SL grid. There are many places that rival my favorites, but these are my personal choices based on my reaction or how long it stayed with me.

The Apollo sim will always be my very favorite place, but here are two that just captured my head and heart. La Reve and pteron are included on my "to die for" list and of course, The A List!

Both are fantastic. Both are fabulously done with a flair that most of us who build, will never achieve. I also included a few stand-outs from Esperance, Nebulosus' ArtHole installation, and also, the conceptual Muzik Haus.

Muzik Haus is included, not because of the build itself. That part is simple, but the concept itself is one that stays with me. Mr Widget is the dj and his party making mash-ups create a total ambiance that drives the performance itself.

He is my current favorite dj. He is a mash-up king. And he shares his knowledge with us so generously.

All these places and all these people... standing before you and your art, sometimes overwhelms me to a point of tears. The emotional connection I feel when I explore or listen is the reason why I believe that art equals life. For without art... life is a dreary place and that is no life for anyone.

Cincinnati: Carew Tower-Netherland Plaza Hotel

Some cool french art images:

Cincinnati: Carew Tower-Netherland Plaza Hotel
french art
Cincinnati's tallest building, standing at 49 stories tall, is one of the finest examples of skyscraper modernism in America. The complex contains the Hilton Netherland Plaza (formerly the Omni Netherland Plaza) and the Palm Court, the fromer lobby of the hotel and now the restaurant, which is self-described as the "fionest example of French Art Deco architecture in the world."

The Carew Tower is a particularly coherent series of public areas that ascend upward from the street entrances, and served as the basis for the design of the Empire State Building. As designed, it makes the most complete statement of the 1920s Jazz Age, an embodiment of speed, high style, and a mass-market machine age.

Construction began in September of 1929, just one month before the stock market crash on October 24 that triggered the Great Depression. Because of this, construction was continued on a modified plan. The grand details (architectural motifs, friezes, and decorative metal) that are common on art deco buildings were stopped at the third floor and plain bricks were used on the floors above. Art deco themes can be found throughout the building, particularly in the metalwork and grillwork of the elevators and lights. Rookwood Pottery floral tiles add the "Cincy" touch to the building

The block-square complex cost M, an enormous sum for the time, and was finished in 13 months by crews working seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The Netherland Hotel is a superb example of European-Deco design adapted to commerce; most of the decorative work had been created in France several years prior to construction of the complex and exhibited at the 1925 Exhibition of Decorative Art in Paris.

Two dollars gets you a ticket to the 574 foot (49th floor) observation deck of the tallest building in Cincinnati.

The Orsay Museum, Paris

A museum opened in 1986 in Paris that used to be the Orsay Station (Gare d'Orsay). It houses French art from 1848 to 1915.

The station building was built from 1898 to 1900

these are some of my better on the coach shots of the museum.

The Musée d'Orsay is a museum in Paris, France, on the left bank of the Seine, housed in the former railway station, the Gare d'Orsay. It holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1915, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography, and is probably best known for its extensive collection of impressionist masterpieces by popular painters such as Monet and Renoir. Many of these works were held at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume prior to the museum's opening in 1986.
