The cabochon is 16.3mm in diameter and 7mm deep. the pin itself is about 6.6mm long. It contains over 15 different colours (and a bit of magic) and takes careful heating in the flame to make the tie-dye technique work.

Who Doesn't Love the Art Supply Store?

I took the little Viewminders out to Blick Art Materials this weekend.

It's always cool to walk around the art store.

Looking at all of the brushes and the paints, the paper and the canvas'...

it makes my mind wander to thoughts of things I've wanted to do but haven't.

In the frame aisle I think of all the shots I want to print and frame.

One by one the art stores I've loved have left us.

I really miss the Pearl across from the Paper Source.

I thought I'd try and capture some images in Blick Art Materials that kind of embrace what it is that I love about these places.

I watched a woman look at the moleskin display for about a half hour...

I wondered what she was thinking as she flipped through each little blank book.

I'd wanted to photograph the display but she was so engrossed in it.

The little artists painted up some masks there at an activity table they'd set up for the weekend.

I sat down on the floor and watched it all go by.

Life I think would be so different if I went to the art supply store thinking about some project that I wanted to do...

instead... it is the art supply store itself that inspires me...

I leave there filled with ideas.

Although now associated with fine art and culture, the Fine Arts Building was originally commissioned by Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing to house a wagon carriage shoroom and designed by Solon S. Beman and completed in 1885. Converted in 1898, three floors were added along with an interior redesign. With its columns, rough stone, and arched entranceway and windows, the building is typical of the Romanesque style. The interior public spaces, including murals on the 10th floor, remain virtually untouched from the remodeling.

The Fine Arts Building was designated a landmark by the Chicago Department of Planning and Development on June 7, 1978. The Historic Michigan Boulevard District, which stretches along Michigan Avenue between 11th and Randolph Streets, was designated on February 27, 2002.

Hand-made seal skin dolls with hoods made of polar bear fur, by renowned artist Ursula Paniyak, of Chevak, Alaska. What makes Paniyak’s traditional Cup’ik Eskimo dolls especially unique is how their limbs are positioned to be fishing, dancing, weaving baskets, or representing any other number of cultural native activities.
