Zhang Zhi-rong (aged 12),
Gansu, China.

“I am moved by Zhang Zhi-rong’s drawing Dry Field,” explains Hong Kong artist Gukzik Lau (you can see her own canvas Hot City in this exhibition). “Cracked soil is framed in the Chinese character for ‘farmland’. I asked primary school children to put a chocolate ball in their mouths, and to imagine that the chocolate is Earth. The children’s own body temperature melted the ‘world’. In 35 of their 52 drawings, children expressed a wish for rain. I want to remind people that the wealth we enjoy today has come at a price. A heavy price that the people in Gansu and other poor communities are paying.”

Artists from around the world have painted canvases illustrating the human impact of climate change in their countries. Sixteen of these canvases are being exhibited at the UN Climate Negotiations in Poznan, Poland, from December 1, 2008.
